How To Survive In The World Of Beauty

How To Survive In The World Of Beauty

Competition in the beauty industry is high. That makes finding and keeping a job difficult, so you need to make sure you stand out from the rest. Here, we’ve compiled a number of ways you can survive rigorous interviews and long days at work – all whilst making a name for yourself in the world of beauty.

Stick to your strengths

When working in the beauty sector, you need to find what you are good at and continuously improve on it. Being a jack of all trades won’t help you stand out in this profession, but if you can demonstrate a specific service to a high enough quality, you’ll have a better chance of getting your career off to the best start.

That being said, knowing other in-demand services is also a bonus. But, when applying for jobs, show off your best skills first.

Hone your skills

Just because you have finished beauty college, doesn’t mean you can’t learn a new trick or two. The best beauticians are always learning and finding different ways to create the perfect look.

Ask friends and colleagues to be models for any innovative techniques you find. There are a range of online beauty courses and YouTube videos to keep you up to date with the latest trends.

Create a portfolio

Having a collection of all your best works is never a bad thing. Even if you already have a job, create a portfolio – either online or in print – to show your clients the range of services you offer.

This could additionally encourage repeat customers who want to try out new services from someone they trust.

Get yourself on social

Social media is a useful tool for beauticians and artists alike. Instagram and Pinterest are particularly great platforms, enabling you to show highlights from your portfolio and engage with your customers.

Being active on these platforms is an easy way to see what your target audience is saying about certain trends too, and it gives you the opportunity to get more exposure. You can also offer discounts and hold competitions to gain further traction.

Practise self-care

The life of a beautician can be hectic. With long, busy days on your feet, you need to make time for yourself wherever possible.

Newly qualified beauticians may feel like they need to prove their worth to their first employer, but by overexerting yourself, you can quickly become run down and tired – which will actually make you more prone to mistakes and could even make you ill.

Having a day to relax and pamper yourself is needed occasionally. Some salons even offer wellbeing activities such as yoga and meditation. This, along with a healthy diet and lots of water, will give you the energy you need to become a real asset to the team.

Look the part

When working in a salon, you need to make sure your appearance is simple and professional. That doesn’t mean you can’t show off your more artistic side, however.

Our range of salon uniforms here at La Beeby, for example, can be styled with watches and belts. And with a range of colours available, you can get noticed (in all the right ways) with ease.
